Root canal treatment

Root canal treatment (or endodontic treatment) is a procedure that cleans the damaged pulp, seals the canal containing the pulp, and restores the tooth. Each tooth in the arch is nourished by a system of blood vessels & nerves called the pulp. When this system is damaged by a bacterial invasion or an injury, it causes pain, swelling, or infection.

When to do root canal / endodontic treatment?

  • Cavities with large cavities cause damage to the tooth pulp.
  • Tooth trauma.
  • Periodontitis has spread to the pulp, causing irreversible inflammation, dead pulp, rotten pulp ...
  • Sometimes the pulp teeth are still alive but still receive endodontic treatment due to the requirements of the restoration.

The root canal procedure is completely painless because the doctor will numb the area so you just feel like you are having a regular filling.
Usually root canal treatment requires about 2-3 appointments, sometimes with severely infected teeth it takes more time.
After root canal treatment, with today's modern dental technology, there are many measures such as porcelain crown, bleaching, cosmetic filling.... It will help restore the natural beauty and function of your teeth. After the treatment (pulp removal), the teeth will be healthier than the pulpitis. However, teeth that have died of pulp are often "crunchy" and easily broken, so a crown is needed to protect the tooth's strength and longevity.

Why need root canal treatment when indicated?

  • When you are prescribed root canal treatment by your doctor, do not delay. Here are 5 good reasons that you should perform endodontic treatment when indicated
  • The pulp is infected and dying. When this happens, you should have a root canal treatment to prevent the infection from spreading to the underlying supporting structures (bone, periodontal ligament).
  • Root canal therapy helps to end the pain caused by the inflammatory process. Root canal treatment does not increase pain but helps you control and relieve pain. When detected and treated early, you will no longer feel pain.
  • The pulp will not heal on its own. When you skip treatment, in some cases this pain may go away on its own but this is not a good sign as this indicates that all the nerves and blood vessels inside are dead. The infection slowly spreads inside like smoldering coals in a fire and the pain will soon return.
  • The situation may be worse than you think. Left untreated, bacteria will spread to the bone that supports the tooth. This can cause a systemic infection, which can lead to a greater risk of serious illnesses such as stroke, heart disease, etc.
  • Root canal treatment can help preserve the tooth. Not treating the root cause pain, infection and lead to tooth loss. While missing teeth can lead to a host of other problems such as gum disease. bite… and other health problems.
